Temperature Twins! Mumbai vs Winnipeg??

There are a lot of things different about living in India vs Canada… not the least of which is typically the weather!

When people think of India, they immediately imagine blazing heat!

And Canada? Let’s just say the exact opposite…

And if its Winnipeg? Try swirling snowstorms. And Mumbai? Warm, humid perennial summer!

So this week when my father mentioned how nice and warm it is in Winnipeg? I just so happened to check the temperature…

There in Winnipeg…

And here in Mumbai….

Are you kidding me? How rare is it to have EXACTLY the same temperature in two such otherwise different climates?

Bagel Shop ‘Adda’ in Mumbai

The concept of an ‘adda’ in India is broadly a gathering of people in prolonged conversation. What primarily comes to mind when I hear this word is a group of guys in Kolkata in animated earnest debate, perhaps over a cup of chai collected by the side of a road.

In Mumbai, you can indeed find pockets of the ‘adda’ culture and my partner can often be found hanging out at his ‘office’ aka The Bagel Shop

So often that it is well known which table is ‘his’ and there is even a photo  next to ‘his’ table with a quote from him about the Bagel Shop being his ‘adda’.

Cricket fever in Mumbai

Folks who know me well know that sports just isn’t my thing.

After decades in India, I have yet to be converted to a cricket fan.

So imagine the surprise that I… someone who doesn’t follow cricket landed up at a coveted T20 cricket match in Mumbai. The game was a few days ago when West Indies trounced England.

Tonight most of India will be glued to their TVs… tonight the fate of the India team will be decided… tonight I almost wish we still had cable… I may not have cricket fever but I’m curious to know what happens!

Vienna Store’s Elephant Sized Surprise

Once upon a time there was a humble store on Hill Road in Bandra, Mumbai, India.

Then along came an artist who transformed it into a great big happy blue elephant! Festooned with red, this pachyderm attracts smiles from passerbys.

A young friend recounted the tale how excited she was to check out this amazing quaint little place.

And what exactly is it? A cheerful cafe? A cute curio shop? An artful daycare?

Nope!

It sell eggs. As in wholesale eggs. As in cartons and cartons of eggs. That’s it.

They say not to judge a book by its cover but… in this case one can be forgiven for not instantly connecting elephants with eggs!

“What the heck?” in Mumbai

Are these a new art installation? Some fancy creative contraption? Preparing for the space age piping?

All around our building these shiny new objects attached themselves to our pipes…

2015-12-21 Mayur Rats2

For those not familiar with life in Mumbai, you may be forgiven for your confusion.

After all, their purpose may simply not be required in your parts.

However for us? Let’s just say there was more than one reason we decided to welcome a kitten into our home. It was also in hopes that she would be a good mouse (or rat… or bandicoot) catcher!

Particularly since all the construction, let’s just say that the rodents of the neighbourhood have become rather adept at scurrying up our pipes. Those of us on the lower floors in particular are prone as they climb up and then hop through windows into homes full of all sorts of goodies.

But since these suckers came up? Not one rodent. Phew! Simple yet effective.

Any other unique ways of keeping rodents and other pesky creatures at bay in your home?

Introducing Sunday Snaps

Over the last few years, I’ve snapped a lot of random pictures that capture a short story or glimpse into everyday life both in Bombay, in my travels around India and Asia.

Most of them end up my DropBox photos folder – neatly labeled by year, month and location. In short – stored but forgotten.

Then along came a notice warning me that my ‘free’ extra 48 GB was expiring. Dropping me from 57 GB of space to 9 GB. And my current ‘usage’ a whopping 43 GB. Oops!

Sure I could just dump everything on a hard drive and be done with it. However I decided to do a little photographic ‘spring cleaning’… deleting many, saving a few and selecting a choice pic or two to share these ‘everyday’ images.

Welcome to ‘Sunday Snap Stories’…. just an image (or two) with a simple thought (or story) to share a little insight into something you could stumble across around the corner from home in Bandra, Mumbai or traipsing around India.

First up? A typical Mumbai skyline shot of the Bandra-Worli SeaLink taken from a friend’s home.

Boxing Day Bonus!

This Boxing Day came with an extra bonus.

It was the day our new kitten came home. Her previous human is heading back to the US, so she’s sauntered with a swish of her long tail into our hearts.

Yes… I’m liable to be a crazy cat lady for some time.

Here is lil Zoe at her original human’s home…

The quietest Diwali yet!

There is something exceedingly off about this picture… It is the middle of the day, there is no whine or banging of construction noises from the flat next door…. There is no pulsing music blaring at top volume… There are only the occasional burst of random fire crackers…

Is this really Diwali?

A peaceful, relaxed and frankly rather enjoyable Diwali?

Could it be that finally we can welcome Lakshmi into our homes with only the gentle glow of diyas?

Can I dare hope?? A few hours more will tell…

For those of you heading out soon to win or lose fortunes over cards, share merriment and gift giving with family and friends, let me add an exuberant ‘Happy Diwali!’ to the mercifully quiet chorus this year!

When my partner and I left for Canada and the UK in June, monsoon was just kicking off. We had hopes our time away would coincide with the worst of the torrential rains. Let’s face it – monsoon in Mumbai can be marvellous at first and then maddening as it carries on. (more…)

Googling your way around Mumbai

Lately I’ve had oodles of meetings that take me from one end of Mumbai to the other.

But I gotta admit, I’m not the best at directions. OK, let’s be real – I’m incredibly directionally challenged. And with meetings scattered around the city, I’ve had a frustrating moment or two.

You would think this is where google maps comes galloping to the rescue!

However it has its quirks in India. (more…)
