Whisky Lady – July 2017

July was supposed to be a slow month… During monsoon, things can grind nearly to a halt in Mumbai under a deluge of rain. And with only two whisky clubs scheduled to meet, it seemed not much would be happening.

So a few friends and I decided to invite Krishna Nakula, India’s Malt Maniac to Mumbai. Which triggered going from a light month to become chock full of Whisky Lady tastings in Mumbai! Easily my busiest month this year – possibly ever…

It also just so happened to be the month, I celebrated Whisky Lady in India’s 500th post!! Woo hoo!!!

So join me in a synopsis of July 2017’s whisky adventures…

The Whisky Ladies Compass Box Quintet featured:

The gents from the Bombay Malt & Cigar club met twice to make up for missing the previous month’s session…

The 1st was the Scotch Malt Whisky Society Quartet:

The 2nd set was the American Westland with a trio of:

An impromptu excuse to share a few interesting open bottles and samples lead to an evening of Monsoon Malts & More – including a cocktail too!

  • Eddu Silver 40% – Buckwheat whisky from Bretagne, France
  • R & B Distillers – New entrant bottling interesting whiskies
    • Borders Single Grain 51.7%
    • Raasay “While We Wait” 46%
  • The Exceptional – Craft Distillers Sutcliffe and Ex Macallan’s Willie Phillips new baby
    • Blended Grain Scotch Whisky 43%
    • Blend Small Batch Scotch Whisky 43%
  • Highland Park 12 year 40% – An echo of the old 18 year favourite
  • Finlaggan Cask Strength 58% – A most enjoyable mystery Islay

Just for fun, we held a “Speed Tasting” session by Keshav Prakash of The Vault Fine Spirits featuring:

We then had a “Dream Drams” evening with an exceptional set enjoyed with India’s Malt Maniac Krishna Nakula featuring:

  • Mortlach 37 year (1976/2013) 43% G&MP
  • Lochside (1981/2005) 43% G&MP
  • Mosstowie 35 year (1979/2015) 48.1% Signatory
  • Aultmore 5 year (2007/2012) 66.8% Master of Malt

From Krishna’s Collection we packed into under an hour a few drops of:

I finally shared posts about the February Glenmorangie Bacalta Launch where we sampled:

  • The Original 40% – Foundation of all Glenmorangie “with 140 flavours” — Bill Lumsden
  • Lasanta 12 year 46% – Classic yet enhanced …Creamy, caramel custard, sweet spices
  • Bacalta 46% – Shows how marvellous a malt an ex-Malmsey Madeira finish can be!

A busy month indeed! There was no way all the tasting notes could be published in July, so you will simply have to be patient over the coming months as all will be revealed…

Whisky Lady – June round up

June was full of so many things – work, travel to London, Winnipeg, Singapore and more!

As for the Whisky Lady side of things?

We had a wee bit of media attention… with a full page feature in the Mumbai Mirror. Be amused… be very amused….

“What next shall why try?”

I was completely humbled by meeting Sukhinder Singh, the guru of The Whisky Exchange, with an opportunity to visit his temple to whisky aka Board Room private collection, rare malts room and private bar in his head office. What a remarkable experience!!

Naturally, our tasting sessions continued…

The Whisky Ladies decided to have ‘A Night with Glen‘ featuring:

Our original group had an unusual range:

The gents from the Bombay Malt & Cigar club didn’t have a June session, but I did post our May tasting of undisclosed distilleries with:

And while I was off gallivanting around Canada, decided to share some light summery whiskey cocktail recipes, courtesy of DISCUS with American whiskies:

  • Old Fashioned – Bourbon, bitters, sugar with a twist of orange
  • Manhattan – Bourbon, vermouth + bitters
  • Mint Julep – Bourbon, simple syrup, bitters + mint
  • The Ginger Baker – Tennessee whisky, ginger, lime + pineapple juice, orgeat syrup with a slice of pineapple
  • Spiced Boulevardier – Infused bourbon, vermouth, campari with a twist of orange or almonds

Whisky Lady – Speedy September

My Whisky Lady posts kept speed with lots of activities in September… including celebrating the 300th post!

The month was supposed to welcome the return of all three tasting groups… However my Jakarta trip derailed our Bombay Malt & Cigar night… oops!

Whisky Lady – March Maltiness

As March heated up in Mumbai, Whisky Lady sampling also kept pace…

All three tasting groups had some real gems and discoveries! I also finished the Canadian samples, brushed off posts from the archives and shared an article published in MansWorld (yes I do write for others from time to time).

It also marked two milestones – over 2,000 followers and nearly 200 posts! (more…)

Whisky Lady – May merriment

Welcome to Whisky Ladys 5th instalment summarising May’s whisky tasting adventures. Finally after a two month hiatus, our merry malt tasting group had our ‘proper’ session. We sampled blind whiskies from three countries:

  • USA (NY) – Hudson Single Malt NAS 46% – Something ‘different’ in a small barrel, hand crafting, unusual 375 ml bottle… doesn’t mean the whisky is any good. Just skip it!
  • Scotland (Highland) – Deanston Virgin Oak NAS 46.3%Decent delicate and slightly dull dram. Perhaps a refreshing spring cocktail made with a light hand and subtle flavours
  • Ireland – Teeling Single Malt NAS 46%Trust the Irish to create a sociable whisky! A complete treat – the kind of whisky you to pull out and enjoy with friends

In addition to our monthly sessions, I held a most enjoyable tasting with another whisky lady where we tried:

Auchentoshan quartet (Whisky Lady)

Auchentoshan quartet (Whisky Lady)

HITS – Unlike most months where it is tough to chose a ‘favourite’, the Irish Wishky Teeling is the only one I would consider stocking in my whisky cabinet for sociable evenings.

MISS – Also unlike most months, there was a clear ‘warning’ too – I still shudder at the Hudson. Don’t… I beg you just don’t…

Another highlight was Whisky Lady invaded Man’s World May edition with an interview with Dr Bill Lumsden.

In honour of Ardbeg’s 200 year, I also published further extracts fro the Bill Lumsden interview focused on Ardbeg.

June should bring some interesting tasting adventures as I will be traveling to Singapore, Vancouver, Winnipeg and Toronto, Canada then carry on to London in July. Let’s see what mischief and merriment can be had! Slainthe!

Whisky Lady – April adventures

Welcome to Whisky Ladys 4th instalment summarising the April’s whisky tasting adventures.

While our formal tasting session was cancelled, the month had two highlights:

  • Whisky Lady invades Man’s World with a Glenmorangie event and interview
  • Tasting take two revisiting Japanese and Indian whiskies from previous tasting sessions

Whisky Lady in a Man’s World

Thanks to an accidental rescue, Whisky Lady now has a regular whisky feature in Man’s World magazine. The 1st assignment took me to Delhi to interview Dr Bill Lumsden, Director of Distilling, Whisky Creation and Whisky Stock for The Glenmorangie Company. (more…)

Rescue of a damsel in distress with an interesting offer!

A funny thing happened recently…

I had a meeting just across the Bandra-Worli Sea Link and my partner ever so kindly said “Just take the Merc and driver!”

How lovely… until after my meeting I hopped in the car and it did NOT start. Thirty minutes later it was quite clear nothing we did would bring a positive result.

My partner suggested I catch a cab home while he sorted out coordinating with mechanics, towing guys and driver on the phone. After all, we had a book launch to attend and there wasn’t anything I could do to help with the poor chariot.

Which is how I came to be standing sweating by the side of the road. Trying to catch a cab in rush hour. On a Friday evening. For a relatively short driving distance. Across the bridge. Where walking is not permitted.

Let’s just say it wasn’t happening. I was well and truly stranded.

I was about to give up and call my partner to rescue me with my car… when up ran a friend offering a lift. (more…)

Whisky Lady – March Madness

Welcome to Whisky Ladys 3rd instalment… with a decidedly desi bent to our sampling adventures.

Just as February had a Japanese theme, March came home to feature whiskies from India! I could just as easily have called this ‘India pride month!’

While our formal monthly tasting was cancelled, most of our group took part in two events covering both of India’s Single Malt distilleries – Amrut and Paul John! (more…)

Whisky Lady – January Journal

It is Friday night and for you whisky drinkers, time to make you jealous!

Some may recall I decided one of my vices passions deserved its own little home. Thus Whisky Lady was born.

I also promised to share whisky posts here only once a month…

My 1st monthly malt missive is a bit of a catch up so bear with me!

Last night we kicked off the new year with: (more…)
