ABCD vs CBAD – “You don’t belong here!”
Most would have heard of American Born Confused Desi (ABCD)… but what about CBAD? Canadian Born Adopted Desi?
No one fits into a simple description. Country of origin and cultural heritage are just a couple of pieces of a very complex puzzle that makes up a person and then distinct people into a community.
I enjoy stories of others, like me, with a longer term embrace of a country other than the land of their birth. Beyond the traditional ‘expat’ is something else. In my case, if it was the reverse – India to Canada – I would be considered an ‘immigrant’. Comfortably settled into my ‘adopted’ country where my everyday ‘lingo’, cultural reference points, life experience and reality is… well… Indian.
So it shouldn’t be a surprise that I tried to join a forum for India bloggers. I’ve seen it featured on many blogs I enjoy so thought – why not give it a whirl?
Apparently I don’t belong. (more…)
Battling the white screen of death
I’m howling at the universe – I want to write gawdammit not wrestle with technology!!
Alas WordPress is determined to drag me kicking and screaming into technical areas that are beyond my ken!
This white screen of death is perilously close to being the death of this blog…
I would like to share my excitement about recent trips to Tokyo, Shanghai, Manila and Singapore… the wondrous world of opening companies… enjoying Lebaran in Jakarta, returning home to a monsoon Mumbai.
Instead all I get is a white screen….
So am going to share the pain this once, make a few more attempts when back in India over the next two weeks…. if unsuccessful will simply admit defeat and retire my wee blog!
Has anyone else battled the ‘white screen of death’ and emerged victorious?

Bang! Bang! “Phhuulease let me in!”
For nearly a month I’ve been locked out of my WordPress account. The thundering silence was not deliberate.
And while the world blithely carried on without my posts… I’ve been an addict freaking out without my blogging faffery fix!

A thousand thank yous!
While I’ve been busy with the Malaysia project, Every Day Adventures in Asia (Mostly!) crossed the 1,000 comments (and likes) threshold!
That friends, family and complete strangers take the trouble to read AND share their thoughts too – I am most appreciative – truly!
There is only one request – keep doing it!

“I’m late! I’m late! For a very important date!!”
Clearly I’m late to WordPress’s “Zero to hero: 30 Days to a Better Blog” given that it is officially over!
My efforts to fast-track screeched to a halt – distracted by the play, preparations for Malaysia and oodles of other activities to be revealed in due course…
And honestly? I found the steps less than stellar. At risk of boring you, here is my compressed 3rd week: (more…) ∞
Zero to Hero Week 2: Trying new things (blog stuff)
As shared, I’m rather late to WordPress’s “Zero to hero: 30 Days to a Better Blog” so attempting to fast-track my way through select steps. This is a compressed version of the 2nd week… For the 1st week, check here.
Zero to Hero Week 1: Behind the scenes (blog style)
I’m a late to WordPress’s “Zero to hero: 30 Days to a Better Blog” however decided to fast-track my way through select steps. Here’s a compressed version of the 1st week…
Day 1: Introduce yourself – My very first post was “Every Day Adventures in Asia (Mostly)” (29 April 2013)
Day 2: What’s in your name – I started just with “Every Day Adventures in Asia” and added the (Mostly) as I expected would share travels to Canada and places beyond Asia too. The tagline “Stories of a Canadian living in India, traveling around Asia” came many months later as my way of making just a teensy bit clearer who I am and what this blog is about.
Day 3: What’s on your mind – Honestly, when “Every Day Adventures in Asia (Mostly)“ began, I didn’t have a full-time job and hadn’t quite taken going ‘independent’ seriously yet… I’m a self-confessed workaholic so having extra time on my hands was a dangerous scary thing.
And while it was great taking a ‘holiday’ and I readily found interesting pursuits, there were limits. I still needed to DO something, ANYTHING to not get completely rusty with working towards deadlines. As I always enjoyed writing, used to share all sorts of stories of my travels, every day life with individual friends and family, thought “Why not start a blog?” (more…)
Give the gift… of your opinion please!
In many countries around the world, cash registers are working overtime and folks are trudging through streets and malls scouring for the perfect gift for that special someone, obligatory family member or “Secret Santa” at work.
Now we are all multi-faceted creatures with a variety of interests – our gifts and gift giving reflects this. And this blog is no exception, particularly as it is a purely personal indulgence. However as I was poking around the statistics for the upcoming 3rd quarter summary, I thought comments from family and friends that “Hey I loved that!” or “That’s totally not my thing so I ignore posts about…”
Rather than make a wild guess or totally piss off all ya super cool readers out there, I would love to hear what YOU want more / less of… I’ve broadly divided along the lines of the blog’s categories. (more…)
