Moosehead dude cycles into Bandra!
Anyone who has wandered around the streets of Bandra can’t help but stumble across some rather remarkable art on building walls, hidden along winding lanes, tucked away on the corner of a convenience stall.
Multiple arts projects find home in this western suburb of Bombay… one of the more recent was part of the Celebrate Bandra festival where St+art brought together a mix of Indian and international artists to create a new series of murals to brighten the buildings of Bandra… (more…)
Project ‘Get Fit!’
There is nothing more humbling than being able-bodied then not. One day you hop skip and jump along… the next one-foot hop aided by a walker!
My silly ankle injury introduced me to all sorts of new wonders in traveling – including checking out the airport wheelchair services in Mumbai, Singapore, Jakarta, Tokyo, Shanghai, Manila, Kuala Lumpur… navigating obstacle courses on crutches… and realising that all that yummy food comes with an extra price beyond dollars and cents alone!
Yup you got it – between hotel and restaurant food for many months, the mad marriage marathons of December, our usual social whirl, there was a ripe recipe for some serious weight gain.
Yeah… us gals in our mid-40s don’t exactly bounce back from an enforced sedentary life-style and do have a slower metabolism.
And let’s face it… I got lazy. Inertia is a terribly seductive thing!
However, one of the best things about being between work projects is the TIME and opportunity to start my own project – “Get Fit!” (more…)
Our Christmas Eve Love Story
Three years ago I was invited to a Christmas Eve party at Christmas Eve Building hosted by theatre personality / advertising guru Alyque Padamsee.
Little did I know how one evening would change my life.
You see… that was when I met my partner.
From the very first moment, there was something.
The next day a friend and I dropped by Christmas lunch at his home where I met his mother, extended family and friends. Instantly plunged into his nearest circles.
Our first ‘date’ was that evening at the Bandra Gymkhana Christmas ball. Can it get any better than a debonair man sweeping you off your feet?
A few days later we flew to Bangkok for New Years. This wasn’t a fancy resort trip, it was to spend time with my adopted family – three siblings, their partners, five kids, parents, two maids and a rambunctious dog in the suburbs. As one sister warned “If he can survive this madness, he’s a keeper!”
By the time we returned, we had skipped past all the normal dating rituals and started to look for a place to live together.
We just knew… it was that simple.
It was the best thing that ever happened and today I give thanks for taking a chance on love and being blessed with such an amazing partner. We enrich each others lives and I am looking forward to a lifetime of adventures together.
PS – In June 2017 we formally tied the knot with immediate family and a few friends in Winnipeg, Canada. And the journey together continues…

Winnipeg wedding..

The majority minority complex – Christmas communalism
I’m a minority. A minority who generally considers herself very fortunate to be blessed with the opportunity to call India my adopted home.
However some elements in the Hindu majority have a ‘majority minority complex’ and recent expressions are quite disturbing.
Fearing losing its place as the majority, certain ‘Hindu’ leaders in positions of political power and influence, are flexing their might with tactics such as:
- Telling schools to have ‘good governance‘ activities on Christmas, effectively cancelling the holiday
- ‘Ghar wapasi’ campaigns with announcements of ‘reconversion’ ceremonies scheduled for Christmas day
Now… good governance is sorely lacking in this country…. (more…)
Urban Village – I stand on guard for thee!
It has been a VERY long time since I strolled through the urban village outside our door.
Partly this was because for months I was traveling and hardly home in Mumbai. However it was largely as I simply wasn’t up to the obstacle course with my busted then fragile recovering ankle…
However I finally overcame the nervousness of potentially re-wrecking my ankle on the uneven winding paths and took a wander along the familiar twists and turns…
The parrots are inside and post Eid also means the goats are gone. The kitten has become a grandmother with her latest offspring’s offspring doing their own interpretation of a peak-a-boo while a snoozing potted cat was easily spotted. (more…)
Side helping of ‘marriage’ with your ‘lease’ registration?
Renewing our lease was on my ‘must do’ list before ‘rewarding’ myself with the trip to The Netherlands.
Lo and behold this remarkable feat was accomplished the day of my flight and I gotta admit, either I’ve become completely adapted to how things work here (probably) or this process might just be becoming less painful and complicated than it used to be. (more…)
“Whaddya want?” Bookshelves?!
We are about to renew our lease for another three years and decided it was time to make a few changes.
Coincidentally, it is around the time of our birthdays too.
So when my partner insisted I say what I wanted this year, my response was none of the typical stuff…
No sirree! What did I want? What did I really want?
Bookshelves… (more…)
The pool ‘princess’ and her adoring audience
I’ve always known how to swim. My sister and I were in a pool from practically the time we were babes. And it has always been a joy to jump in and start swimming… without a care in the world! A quiet peaceful time of contemplation, random musing or even brain ‘radio silence’.
Growing up with a father who was professor at the University of Manitoba meant access to their olympic size pool. I never knew anything else so just assumed all pools were big, cool, pristinely clean, bright and full of people enjoying their laps.
To discover people splash about in small hot pools chatting was bizarre. I mean come on, pools are meant to enjoy a blissful swim… Beaches are where you combine swimming and play but a pool? Pools are to be in the solo zone, a happy place for focused fitness! (more…)
Diwali – Festival of lights… not pollution
It is that time of the year again… where ears and head hurt from non-stop noise, eyes itch from pollution, a persistent cough catches, animals cower in corners, fortunes are won and lost over cards.
Since 1995 I’ve witnessed how Diwali celebrations have evolved – 1st in Delhi and now in Mumbai for the last decade.
It is heartening to see the growing awareness around the environmental hazards, dangerous child labour practices and a movement towards ‘new ways’ to celebrate the Festival of Lights with less noise, pollution and waste. (more…)
NOTA vote for Maharashtra
“Ding dong!” Since returning from Jakarta, the doorbell kept ringing with the latest candidate soliciting votes.
All were taken aback to discover a firangi (foreigner) in their midst… and therefore obviously someone who cannot vote.
While I was off in Indonesia, Maharashtra’s chief minister stepped down triggering elections.
And there wasn’t much of a choice: (more…)
