6 Ways to Give to Nepal – Earthquake Relief
My heart goes out to all affected by the tragedy of the earthquakes in Nepal. VidaManejo has put together a list of six organisations that are working to make a difference.
Delhi times.. they are a changin!
I was back in Delhi for a few days and lucky me – a friend ever so kindly offered to let me crash at his place in Safdarjung Development Area.
I was extra excited as this was my old ‘hood’ from Delhi days 2003 – 2005. So when I had a bit of time, decided to take a leisurely stroll.
My feet unerringly went towards one of my favourite walking routes… I started to remember its path… Begin at the delightful Rose Garden then carry on through to Deer Park. (more…)
Demolition gang!
Once upon a time there was a lovely little sanctuary. A cosy home much beloved by its inhabitants. Favourite of all was a delightful den where they would rest their weary heads each and every night.
Then along came the dastardly demolition gang who, with raw might, destroyed their happy little nest. No corner was immune to the unrelenting pounding and bashing!
Welcome to our new reality…What was only yesterday our bedroom. (more…)
Maidless in Mumbai
Pssssst! We have a dirty little secret!
We’ve been without a maid in Mumbai for the better part of a month.
When I mention that to anyone who lives here… or has lived here… they are aghast! It is unimaginable that one survives without ‘help’.
“How are managing?” “What about all the dust and dirt?” “What happened?!”
And for those who are unfamiliar with life in India:
“What is the fuss about?” “We’ve never had a maid!” “You had someone clean for you?! I want that!!”
Truth be told, it made us realise how lazy we’d become. (more…)
ABCD vs CBAD – “You don’t belong here!”
Most would have heard of American Born Confused Desi (ABCD)… but what about CBAD? Canadian Born Adopted Desi?
No one fits into a simple description. Country of origin and cultural heritage are just a couple of pieces of a very complex puzzle that makes up a person and then distinct people into a community.
I enjoy stories of others, like me, with a longer term embrace of a country other than the land of their birth. Beyond the traditional ‘expat’ is something else. In my case, if it was the reverse – India to Canada – I would be considered an ‘immigrant’. Comfortably settled into my ‘adopted’ country where my everyday ‘lingo’, cultural reference points, life experience and reality is… well… Indian.
So it shouldn’t be a surprise that I tried to join a forum for India bloggers. I’ve seen it featured on many blogs I enjoy so thought – why not give it a whirl?
Apparently I don’t belong. (more…)
Urban Village: Invasion of the car cat nappers!
Last couple of Sundays on my walk to and from the gym, I’ve enjoyed seeing the latest developments in the neighbourhood feline world.
Most can been seen enjoying their Sunday afternoon slumber…
However a few decided to conquers cars!
I first noted the car capers with these three hanging out by a silver gari.
Then I spotted this one – you can only see 5 in this picture however there were another two under the car and another was strolling up to join!
It was like a cat car conclave! I think I missed the memo. 🙂

Happy Holi Y’all!!
This year I’m home in Mumbai for Holi and enjoying a relaxing day!
It wasn’t always so ‘chilled’… I remember mad Holi celebrations in Delhi in the 1990s… for days leading up to the festival anyone walking on the street was ‘fair game’ for a splash of colour!
Especially as I regularly strolled by a co-ed college on my way to the bus stop (heading to my college in another part of the city), enthusiastic young lads used to delight in chasing a young firangi with playful throwing of colour.
This year was so subdued that we were even able to surface early afternoon to quiet roads. Inspired by the plentiful fresh vegetables in the market, I was struck by a cooking mood.
Connected with a couple of friends and am now looking forward to a low-key sociable evening. Sounds about right! (more…)
How to have a hippy princess holiday!
Sometimes a gal just needs to release her inner hippy child to cavort with her princess streak to enjoy a few fabulous days of bliss in Goa!
How… you ask?
Fly Business Class
In footloose fancy free hippy mode, decide to fly last-minute, pack only a small bag of comfy casual clothes but…
Then out pops the princess with business class for a mere 1 hour flight (ok one was a première seat sale practically the same price as eco & the other was eco bumped up with a nearly expiring upgrade voucher… why waste, eh?) (more…)
Going Goa Gone!
Last time I was in Goa was Dec 2013 – Jan 2014… I was there helping organise a music festival so it was a mix of work and play.
In 10 minutes I’m out the door and on my way to the airport… to catch a flight to Goa!
The purpose this time?
Let’s see… catching up with friends… beach… book… beer… swim… food… and repeat!
Sound good? Certainly much more appealing than the weather my companions are returning to Canada for after these days together… what was it… -30’c?!

Mumbai Marriage Marathons…
Beware un-married couples in India! If you are caught sauntering along hand in hand or ‘Gasp!’ smooching your guy or gal in public… you just might be hauled off to the nearest temple to get wed!
India’s morality police decreed that couples celebrating Valentines Day with PDA (public displays of affection) should have their romance result in marriage (and preferably producing 4 Hindu babies!)
Such shotgun shadis would certainly avoid all the fuss, fan fare and expense that are typical of Indian weddings.
Given the marathon of marriages of the last few months, that might not be a bad thing (I’m joking ok?). (more…)
