Thank you client! I nearly missed welcoming the Year of the Horse! Chinese New Year (CNY) is completely absent India… and I was missing the celebrations…
After being in Singapore during CNY, this time of year is incomplete without all the gorgeous red lanterns everywhere, the loud drums and cymbals heralding the coming of the dragon or lion dance… and then the crazy antics of the lion dance acrobats!
I was beginning to feel like I’d completely skipped what is a seriously big festival in Asia!
But thanks to the latest project in Kuala Lumpur (KL), Malaysia, every where I go, there are signs of celebrations.
On the second day of our training, the participants big boss came to hand out the bright red envelopes to the young unmarried employees.
No surprise a favourite phrase seen everywhere in various versions is Gong Hei Fat Choi (恭喜發財,利是逗來) which I understand is roughly translated as “Congratulations and be prosperous, now give me a red envelope!”
Last night, during dinner at Atmosphere 360 (KL Tower‘s revolving restaurant) had a brilliant view of the fireworks in the distance!
I have a good feeling about the Year of the Horse… who would decline happiness, prosperity and all that good stuff?
Gong Hei Fat Choi to you then! 🙂
Haha! Don’t think I’ll get any lucky red envelopes but things do seem to be looking positive for this year! 🙂
Cool… they really went all out. Funny here in Shanghai I haven’t spotted any massive displays like this. Maybe I need to go to the busy tourist areas to find it, but at this time of year it is more crowded than usual, so I do my best to avoid it.

They have gone all out here! It is great to see and I’m enjoying immensely. 🙂
I did find a cool light display last night which is funny since it is kinda out of the way of most houses. There is a large hotel and small mall there, so maybe they hosted it to drum up business. Over the holiday it looked like there were also performances there. I snapped a quick photo and then ran… it was bitter cold last night. Without mittens and trying to take pictures my hands were numb in minutes. Hoping it will warm up and then maybe I can go see it again before they take it down. I guess I picture in my mind that displays for CNY would be everywhere… like Christmas is at home 😉 and was surprised when they are random and spread out.
Hope it warmed up and you did get a chance to go back!
Walking into the hotel last night, the entry looked bare – the gorgeous CNY display in the centre of the lobby was gone! Sigh…
Yes they don’t seem to keep them up for long do they? Well it didn’t warm up and the display is probably come down now since the last day of CNY is over. Oh well I got a few pics before I froze the other night. I will have to remember for next year and try again.
That’s some advance planning! 🙂
Ha ha! It was really cool though… I just can’t forget about it 😉
Happy new year!
Many thanks and same to you!! It has all the signs of being a good year!
CNY in KL is always Fab.. I miss home… 😦 But thanks for showing me a glimpse of it! 🙂
